Stoplight Designs

So here are the final versions of The Stoplight Los Angeles logo that I made for Gabe. The first one is the one I had for final review:

He said he wanted something "from a city". So I tried a stencil font and he enjoyed it. here is the final image:

Tastes are always different from person to person, and I learned a good lesson about designing for someone who isn't me. Either way, I'm pretty happy with the result. There are even some "simple" versions I like. Makes me think that a stencilled whole design might look pretty good on a wall or something:

And one last thing, I did some expirements with putting photos behind the design and I liked a lot of them:

More logo stuff!

So Gabe asked me to make him a logo for his one man event planning venture. (The first show is on Halloween by the way.) He's calling it The Stoplight Los Angeles. I made some sketches and eventually came up with the second one here. The colors are as such because they were the ones in my pen cup. I would also like to hi light the fact that the word "plight" is intentionally sectioned to be its own thing. I feel struggle is important, and I also feel Gabe would agree.

Final version to follow!

Comic update.

So, I'm still working on that comic from a while ago. Here's proof!

That "done" post-it is a bit misleading. That page is done. And even that page has a few minor details to be tewaked. Anyhow, It feels good to be back on this project again.

New Project

So the wedding is gearing up for a wonderful year long roller coaster ride of planning and stress. Flowers, honeymoon, tux, dress, alterations, boots (yeah boots), and so much other stuff its insane. I think that there kind of is an entrance exam for marriage. And it's this part. Okay, that aside, I have a new project.

When I was younger my friend Gabe and I created comics. He and I collaborated on content and I drew them. Given my remedial skills as an illustrator, we kind of looked like the same person in the comics. And, while the storyline was kind of there, I like to think we'll have more depth this time around. We're going to attempt a comic about childhood. A sort of blend of reality and fantasy. I found that after drawing long lanky characters all my life, drawing kids is freaking hard. (As I said to both Gabe and Deanna because I thought myself clever: "They're all big heads and tiny arms. Like a T-Rex, but less cool.")

So now gabe and I are working on a story and character models. I see the comic starting out playfully, but dealing with some real issues as the story progresses. Possible things to tackle:

Is what is happening (aliens, dinosaurs, etc.) actually real?
If not, then is the other friend even real?
And probably more, lol. I have some sketches I'd like to share now.

Winter Break: Gabe's Headshots

My friend Gabriel needed headshots. I wish I'd gotten some more straightforward smiling ones. but these are more real. Less headshots, more portraits.

More innocent times.

My best friend Gabriel and I visited our old elementary school tonight. Doris Hancock Elementary. It's surreal. Memories come in flashes. Smells send you reeling. The texture of trees make you feel younger. How much has changed versus how much is the same. One big metaphor for my own self. Gabe and I used to walk back and forth beneath these trees talking during the lunch break. We were outcasts.

The Lost Camera

Years ago my best friend Gabe and I went camping in the forests of Lake Tahoe. I brought my camera(a Samsung Digimax 130 1.3 Megapixel camera. An archaic piece if equipment.), as I was just beginning to take my first steps in photography. During one of the days we went to a beach which we dubbed SOB Cove. (Because it's a real son of a bitch to get there.) Once there, we went into the water. It was at this point that I relaized my camera was still in my pocket. It didn't turn on. Even when I let it dry out, it still wouldn't turn on. I quickly went out and bought a box camera. When we returned from our trip, my camera was still a lifeless heap of plastic and wiring. So I put it in a box and forgot about it.

Until today.

I put batteries in it and it made this twittery beeping noize, then a whir. And then as I sat there stunned, the LCD screen lit up. There were a total of 10 images still stored on the camera. I remember there being more, but who cares? What follows is all ten of those images.

My old habits...

My old habits are still out there, fading. I used to stencil in drainage ditches in my suburban neighborhood. I went back to see what remained of them and to my surprise, some of them were still in good shape. Others were not so lucky. Here are a few of the pictures I took. The rest can be found Here.

This one made me feel especially special. It's a stencil someone else made which they sprayed next to my (and Gabe's) original 6 foot anatomical heart stencil.
